Professional Weight Management
For the past 30 years we’ve been told to reduce our fat intake and to count our calories.
This has not worked!
As a nation we have become fatter to the extent that 60% of Australians are overweight or obese.

For many years the dietary pyramid has encouraged us to consume six to eleven servings of carbohydrates per day.   Current research suggests these levels are too high taking into consideration our current relatively sedentary lifestyles.
Scan any supermarket shelf, and you’ll be bombarded with messages that a low-fat diet is a heart-healthy diet.  But is it?  The short answer is NO: low-fat diets only make us a lot fatter around the belly, which is a prime heart disease risk.
When you cut fat out of your diet you have to replace it with something, and that something is usually carbohydrates.  Low-fat foods are pretty tasteless and sweeteners are often used to restore the ‘mouth feel’ that fats provide.  And because these foods lack essential nutrients, your body urges you to eat more in a vain attempt to get what’s missing.  You end up bloated, with a pale and dull-looking complexion and kilos piling on around your middle.  Depression sets in and you binge eat for comfort.
If your low-fat diet gives you food cravings, energy slumps, headaches, tiredness and irritability
IT'S TIME TO CHANGE TO A PROFESSIONALLY MONITORED LOW CARB PROGRAM.

Carbohydrates that are not burnt for energy by the body are taken up by the fat cells and stored as FAT.
Obesity increases the prevalence of most cardiovascular risk factors and is the most predominant cause of diabetes. Learning about how different foods affect specific hormonal levels that are involved with weight control allows people to make some simple changes to their diet that promote fat loss.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is an indicator of optimal weight for health. To determine your BMI simply divide your weight in kilograms by your height squared. For example: A person whose weight was 78kg and height was168cm, would be 78 divided by (1.68 X 1.68 = 2.82) =27.65.
Adults with a BMI between 19 and 24 have less risk for illness such as heart disease and diabetes than individuals with a BMI between 24 and 29. A BMI greater than 30 indicates greatest risk for obesity related diseases.
Being in a healthy weight range is important for all Australians.  Obesity is becoming an epidemic throughout many countries.
The Professional Weight Management Programs used at the Goolwa Natural Health Centre teach people how to lose excess body fat safely and provide the skills needed for long term weight management. They are designed to provide you with virtually all the necessary amounts of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and essential fatty acids in proper balance.

Our programs are EDUCATIONAL.
They empower you to make better food choices, unlike "quick fix" options which are so readily available today. You will learn about different food groups and more importantly, correct portion sizes. We believe that EDUCATION is the key element to maintaining long term weight management and good health.

It is important to have a compelling reason to achieve weight loss goals, whether it be for a special occasion i.e. wedding, birthday, summer holidays, or other event, or for health concerns; perhaps the Doctor is treating you for heart, blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar regulation problems.

Do you have cravings for bread, cakes, chocolate or sweets?
Have you developed an ugly ‘spare tyre’ around your middle?
Blame it on insulin, often called the ‘hunger hormone’ because of it’s involvement in regulating appetite.  Insulin is produced in response to eating carbohydrates.  High carbohydrate diets require more insulin to be produced and the higher levels of insulin promote fat storage.
“If you’re eating more carbohydrates than your metabolism can use as energy, the glucose is converted into triglycerides or fat” says Kay. “Continuing this process over time can lead to Metabolic Syndrome or ‘Syndrome X’ as it is known.

Metabolic Syndrome shows as a cluster of symptoms which include obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.
“Our clients learn how different foods affect their weight and hormonal system” Kay adds, “by burning body fat and increasing metabolism, they feel so much better in themselves and their confidence improves as the kilos and centimetres come off”.
Whether there is thyroid or other health issues; or symptoms of Syndrome X, our programs are tailored for each individual. Progress is monitored weekly with private one-to-one consultations with Kay Semovic who has clinical Naturopathic experience dating back to 1994. Naturopathy consultations are also available for all manner of health concerns including immune issues, hormonal problems, skin disorders, stress, and depleted energy reserves. Health Rebates apply.
If you've made the decision to lose weight, then Kay can certainly help you to reach your goals. The low-carb programs used at the Clinic are particularly helpful for people who've put on weight around the tummy area, and who crave sugars and sweets, and who often feel tired and lethargic - all symptoms of Syndrome X or Metabolic Syndrome.
The programs use normal everyday foods from home, and it’s easy to incorporate in with busy routines and family life.
